Car Buyer Market
Spacer Image
A buyer’s market might be a little hard to understand, but basically, it revolves around two key factors: supply and demand. A seller’s market involves those same factors but in reverse.

The difficult thing about the auto industry is that in this economy, the whole dynamic can change on a dime leaving both dealerships and buyers confused and uncertain.

First, let’s talk about a seller’s market.  For a long time, that’s what the auto industry has been.  They had the cars, sports utility vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles etc, and the public wanted them.  We live in a society that is very much convenience oriented.  We have drive through versions of just about everything.  Fast food is more popular than any homemade meal.  Vehicles fit nicely into that package.  Hope in your car, drive through your meal, and take it home to your family.  Aside from leaving work and getting home, you don’t even have to leave that wonderful piece of technology that is the car.  If you don’t have enough money in your wallet for fast food, go to the drive through ATM on the way to the burger store.  Vehicles have become part of our lives and the auto makers knew that.

If you want to see the true definition of a seller’s market, go to a gas station right after a rumor spreads that gas prices are going to rise dramatically.  The line up of cars will be around the block without the gas station having to do anything but open their doors in the morning.  Supply and demand: the gas station has the supply and the public has the demand.

A buyer’s market is the same thing, only in reverse.  A buyer’s market is when the public no longer has interest in a product.  Sales drop and suddenly companies have to start working overtime to try to figure out how to lure customers back in.  They offer incentives, lower prices, redesign and reissue their product and step up promotion of their item to try to get their customers back.  A good example here would be when gas prices suddenly rise.  Go to the gas station the day after gas prices take a significant jump: the place will be more or less abandoned and somewhere a group of people are gathered in a board room trying to figure out how to fix that.  If they do, the market takes a swing back in the other direction.  That is the nature of this game.

Is there a Car Buyer’s Market Right Now?

Many factors affect the state of the car buyer market and because of that, it can be a very hard thing to predict.  Over the last few years, there have been a lot of ups and downs in the automotive industry and no one knows when things are going to balance out.  Rising fuel prices and instability in the automobile manufacturing industry has led to an uncertain future for many of the major car makers.  The question is simple: what does this mean for the buyer?

People have lost faith in the automobile industry.  Through the financial troubles threatening to shake the industry to the core to the Toyota recall, it’s going to be a hard road for them to get that trust back.  Car companies now are doing everything they can to try to save not just their own companies, but the industry as a whole.  With the government stepping in to try to help, the industry has survived: but right now, it is still a buyer’s market.  Factor number two in this buyer’s market is something the automobile industry cannot control: oil prices.

The words peak oil has been combined to describe the time when the world reaches the absolute peak of its possible oil production.  This term first began being used in the 1950s but it was largely ignored.  People are beginning to pay a lot more attention now as reaching peak oil means bad things for all of us.  Some suspect that we are fast approaching that peak while others think we have already reached it and are on the down-slope.  If that is the case, it would certainly explain the higher gas prices.  It also would mean that we haven’t seen anywhere near the worst yet.  The less oil there is in the world, the more valuable and expensive it will become.  If you want to take part in this buyer market, it would be a good idea to act soon.

Is It a Bad Time to Buy a Car?

Thanks to recent trends in the car buyer market and the recent problems: or catastrophes: Toyota has faced, now is likely one of the best times to buy a car.  It might not seem that way, but all eyes are on the auto industry and their eyes are on their customers.  They want to please their customers, give them a pleasant experience with their brand, and hope to foster customer loyalty.  Any smart business executive: and despite recent issues you want to bet the people at the heads of those companies didn’t get to the top by being stupid,  and knows the key to building or rebuilding a successful business is to make sure your customers are happy.  If they aren’t, you need to figure out what’s wrong and fix it.

Keeping that in mind, the automobile industry needs customers now more than ever and they are willing to do what they can to draw people back in.  Furthermore, no company wants to end up in Toyota’s situation so it’s almost certain that cars are safer now than they ever have been.  It might be scary to consider buying a car at this tumultuous car, but now is the perfect time to act.
